In cooperation between the UME’s Central IT department and the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, the University Hospital Essen has been operating a data integration center (DIC) since 2018 that supports both patient care as well as research by providing high-quality clinical data. The DIC is funded as part of the Medical Informatics Initiative by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In all our developments, we always aim to work at the highest technical level. We use modern programming languages such as Python, Scala, and TypeScript, run our automated tests in GitLab and roll out the finished microservices fully automatically in our Kubernetes cluster. UME’s DIC currently already has an interoperable dataset of nearly 1.5 billion FHIR resources, which are extracted fully automatically from UME’s primary systems, and has access to all digitized text documents and much of the imaging data from our facility.
